Women's Vocational Training Center in Kenya
Christine came to the school discouraged, worn out and with barely enough energy to eek out the strength to try to find a way to exist one more day for herself and her son. At 35 years old, she was not only physically ill, but her husband had abandoned her, leaving her nothing. She and her young son lived a marginal existence in a small room in someone else’s home, hoping to be able to obtain food in one way or another. Little did she know how much God loved her or how much women on the other side of the world who had never even met her cared about her.
Elizabeth, director of Dorcas Hands, reached out to her and asked if she wanted to learn the skill of sewing at the women's center. Overcoming her personal shame and timidity, she said "yes" to this outreach of love. Walking miles to get to the school, Christine showed up the first day and has never quit.
Today she is a completely different woman than she was that first day. She is learning who she is as a woman - independent, courageous and strong - glowing with health and vibrant with hope and faith for her future. Yesterday she didn’t know if she would live through the day. Today she is alive with her dreams about her future for herself and her son.
The Plight of Women in Kenya
Nearly one-half of all Kenyan women live in poverty. The reasons are many:
-
Girls are often not enrolled in secondary schools and therefore have little chance of receiving a higher education
-
The post-election violence of 2008 has left many women with the task of raising their children alone
-
Widows are frequently discriminated against
In addition, violence against women is on the increase including assault, battery, and rape. Many mothers resort to extreme measures, as they attempt to care for their families, from prostituting themselves to sending their children to the streets to beg or eat from the trash.
The Dream Fulfilled for Many
The Women's Vocational Training Center in Kitale is enabling single mothers and widows, who live in diverse poverty, to learn skills that allow them to radically transform their lives with sustainable income.
The leaders overseeing this project are church planters who are significantly impacting their community with the message, love, and power of Jesus Christ. The women are discipled by mature women during their training and are prepared to have a spiritual impact on the lives of others. Many of them are able to start churches themselves in the communities they come from.
